Area teens will take their place in the spotlight as Center Stage Theatre presents its annual Teen Musical Theatre Workshop production.

The show “Sing!" is a musical review, featuring songs from Broadway musicals such as "Mamma Mia," "Pippin," "Matilda" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie." It will be performed Nov. 1 to 9 in Shelton.

A cast of 50 students from Shelton High School and seven other high schools — Derby, Amity, Oxford, Woodland, North Haven, St. Joseph and Sacred Heart Academy — have been rehearsing for 10 weeks, under the direction of directors Gina and Mia Scarpa.

Assisting with choreography and other production duties are Casey Blohm, Katie Sedlock and Justin Zenchuk. All are Teen Musical Theatre Workshop alumni.

‘Super-talented cast’

Artistic Director Gary Scarpa said the workshop show “is an evening of great entertainment, presented by a super-talented cast of kids from eight different high schools. It's a chance to see teens at their very best."

The Teen Musical Theatre Workshop has been presented at Center Stage since the theater was founded in 2005 by the Scarpas.

"No activity exemplifies our mission better than the Teen Musical Theatre Workshop," Francesca Scarpa said. "Our daughters and their directing team create an environment where the kids grow not only as performers but also as people. And the result is an amazing show that we all take pride in."

The mission of Center Stage Theater is to enhance the cultural environment of the community; to present high-quality theatrical productions at affordable prices; to encourage growth and education through the performing arts; and to provide a means for interested adults, teens and children to experience and participate in various aspects of live theater.
