PHOTOS: The lights go in for new Riverwalk section in Shelton
The decorative lights have been installed on the new Riverwalk section, as workers begin to build the final section of the walkway from the road to the riverfront. (May 7 photos by Brad Durrell)
The walkway will begin on Canal Street between the Birmingham on the River condo building and Shelton Avalon apartment complex, then go north along the Housatonic River behind Avalon.
It will be 900 linear feet in length, or less than half as long as the main section in Veterans Memorial Park (also known as “The Slab”).
The project began late last fall with site work, putting in underground wiring (for lighting) and then creating an even surface to put in brick pavers for the walking path. Some trees and shrub growth on the riverbank also have been removed.
It appears the new Riverwalk section should open for public use in a few weeks.
The new section will not connect to the existing section. Plans call for the new section to eventually be extended all the way north to the end of Canal Street, where the entrance to the dam begins.
