Pettinella, Jesse’s split Division II doubleheader
Pettinella Painting/Ghostbusters tightened up the Valley Independent Softball League Wood Division II standings a little more by splitting a doubleheader with first-place Jesse’s Barber Shop.
Chris Hebert and Jesse Schremmer each had three hits in sparking Jesse’s to an 11-7 win in the opener.
Ryan Moran and Kevin Deegan both went 3-for-3 to lead Pettinella/Ghostbusters.
The second game saw Pettinella/Ghostbusters (7-11) bust open a tight ball game to upset Jesse’s, 14-8.
Ahead 3-2 late in the game, the Painters busted out to an 11-run lead, before Jesse’s (17-5) rallied late to whittle the final deficit to single digits.
Moran continued his hot hitting, banging out four more hits.
Mike Testani, Tony Pettinella and winning pitcher Tom Bell each garnered three hits, while Nick Musante contributed a pair.
Three base hits by Chris Belske and Mike Happy were best for Jesse’s.
Benanto Real Estate (13-5) continued its climb in the Wood II standings, running its winning streak to nine straight and moving into second place with twin wins over Kut-Rite Hair Shop.
A three-run first inning and an almost flawless defense fired Benanto on to its eighth straight win, 6-2 in the opener.
The three-run first gave the Realtors a lead they would not relinquish. Kut-Rite narrowed the gap to 3-2 after three, but Benanto added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames to wrap up the win.
Steve Owens’ 3-for-3 performance led the way at the plate. Anthony DeFala and Joe Thompson contributed two hits each.
Nick Lifrieri had two of the eight hits yielded by winning pitcher Tom Soda.
The Benanto defense, which committed only one error, was led by Rob French in left field, Steve Tilki in left-center and Thompson at shortstop.
First baseman Jack Liedke, left-center fielder Brian Valeria and losing hurler Pete Silva were best glove-wise for Kut-Rite.
Benanto played flawless defense in the nightcap, a 7-2 win.
Kut-Rite plated its two runs in the first inning and used those tallies to carry a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the third.
The Realtors then tallied three to go ahead 4-2. They maintained that edge until the sixth, when they added three more to lock up the win.
Owens completed a perfect night by going 4-for-4, including a pair of doubles, to pace the victors offensively. Anthony DeFala banged out three hits, while Rob Picirillo, Thompson, Rob French and Steve Tilki notched a pair apiece.
Brian Valeria had three hits for Kut-Rite. Joe Orlando collected two hits.
Thompson engineered a pair of double plays at shortstop to lead the Benanto defense. Tilki in left-center field, French in left and Owens at first base stood out with the gloves.
Tom Soda twirled the win while Silva, who had a good game defensively, took the loss.
Kut-Rite (14-6) rebounded to dominate Seymour Police Union (7-15), 11-4 and 18-2.
Travis Edmonds went 4-for-4 and Jon Petruny banged out three hits in leading Pennsylvania Steel (9-13) to a 13-2 triumph over Haynes Materials (11-9) in the opener of their twin bill.
Jarvis Benjamin delivered a bases-loaded triple and a two-run double to pace Penn Steel, as it completed a sweep by edging Haynes, 12-11.
Benjamin totaled three hits for the game, as did Chris DiCostanzo and winning pitcher John Barquin.
Wood I leader Downtown Danny O’s #2 (15-3) and second place Oxford Paint & Hardware (15-9) met for the third time this year and for the third time they split their doubleheader.
Danny O’s fired up the offense in the second half of the game to topple Oxford Paint 20-8 in the opener.
After taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Danny O’s fell behind when Oxford scored five time in the top of the third.
Danny O’s matched those runs in their half of the inning before plating four runs in each of the next three stanzas to pull away to the double digit win.
Ant Santacroce banged out four hits to pace the winning attack.
