The 73,000-square-foot senior living community being built off Bridgeport Avenue should be completed in April of next year. Gillardi, who is overseeing the construction phase, said up to 50 workers a day can be at the site.
The assisted living facility will feature studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. There also will be a memory-care wing for residents with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Callahan Inc., a Massachusetts-based construction firm, is overseeing the 92-unit project that is located behind the Center at Split Rock shopping complex.
The building is at 708A Bridgeport Ave., between Outback Steakhouse and the Route 8 highway. Access is through the Center at Split Rock driveway.
Green building approach
The three-story building will include a combination of a panelized, EIFS (exterior insulation finishing system) and clapboard façade, asphalt shingling, and an accent-metal, standing-seam roof.
It will be a LEED-certified structure, meaning it utilizes green design — or environmentally-friendly techniques.
Will have 85 employees once open
The $25 million construction project will bring 250 jobs to the area and once completed, the community will employ 85 people. It is scheduled to open in May 2014.
Laurie Rodman of Benchmark Senior Living has said Shelton has strong market fundamentals, with a growing senior population. “Combined with compelling demographics and limited senior housing options, it presents an ideal locale for a new purpose-built assisted living community,” Rodman said.
From a bistro-pub to a library
Amenities will include a main dining room and private dining, a bistro/pub, and library. The community also will have an exercise room and a beauty salon with spa and wellness suite.
“The wing specializing in memory care will be a tremendous asset to the community,” said Pat Callahan, president of Callahan Inc.
“Unfortunately, more and more elders are faced with loss of memory and dementia and this new community will also help families deal with those unique challenges,” Callahan said.
