Residents learn lessons to prevent fraud

-
Byron Peterson of Shelton, a member of the AARP Advocacy Leadership Committee and the AARP Connecticut Leadership Council, recently spoke to members from the Lion Clubs of Shelton, Monroe and Trumbull.

During this presentation, Peterson reviewed two of AARP’s booklets, AARP Watchdog Alert Handbook and The Con Artist’s Playbook.
Some of the categories of scam discussed and some of the preventive measures that should be taken included tech support scams, sweetheart scams, the grandparent scam, and information obtained by stealing your mail.

Preventive tips reviewed included protecting your Social Security number, monitoring your bills and financial accounts, reviewing your credit reports, and being cautious of scams.
