Seven friends gather at the Shelton Farmers Market as they prepare to run in the Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5k Road Race last Thursday morning.

They were among the 750 people who signed up for the annual trek in Shelton and Derby. The weather was a bit chilly, perhaps in the mid-30s, but Shelton had escaped a predicted snowstorm the night before.

The holiday athletic event has become a tradition for many local residents — getting in a little exercise before heading home for family, turkey and all the trimmings, and watching football.

A five-kilometer race involves going about 3.1 miles.
