SHELTON FIREWORKS: See the skies light up in Shelton
More than 15,000 people could watch the rescheduled fireworks display from the Shelton side of the Housatonic River on Saturday, July 5.
Most people gather at Veterans Memorial Park (the Riverwalk), bringing blankets, lawn chairs and picnic meals.
But other people have their own favorite spots to observe the pyrotechnics display — from near City Hall to behind the former Lafayette School, and on the Derby/Shelton Bridge to near the Highland Golf Club.
“It’s always been a fantastic show,” said Ronald Herrick Jr., city parks and recreation director.
This year’s fireworks show was rescheduled from Thursday, July 3 due to rain, and it appears to have been the right call. It rained heavily on Thursday night, and the weather Saturday looks to be ideal — both during the day and in the evening.
Concert begins at 7, fireworks once dark
The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with a concert by The Glamour Girls, who perform retro rock, pop and soul music. The fireworks will begin once it is dark, at about 9:15 or so.
Derby, just across the Housatonic River, puts on its own fireworks at the same time so viewers can observe both of them at the same time.
“You’re basically getting two shows for the price of one,” Herrick said.
People can call the Parks & Rec recorded cancellation line at 203-331-4120 beginning at about 4 on Thursday if any problems should arise with the weather.
Some downtown traffic and parking restrictions will be in effect for the fireworks.
