Shelton agency is added to Valley United Way grants list

The Valley United Way will allocate $506,850 in the next year to 25 organizations and programs.

One new agency, the Christian Counseling Agency in Shelton, joined the list of funded agencies this year.

The Valley United Way board of directors’ decision on allocations came at the end of a two-month process that started with agencies submitting budget requests in May. Then, 24 Allocations Committee volunteers worked under the leadership of committee Chairman Adrienne Cabral to visit with applicants to review their programs and budgets.

Following the visits, the volunteers met to review their findings and to make recommendations to the board. The allocations will cover the period from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

Process may be modified

Valley United Way has begun a review of the allocations process and modifications are expected to be implemented next year.

The board will also be implementing a new Special Issues grant program later this summer and will conduct its annual Special Needs grant program later this fall.

Valley United Way is a philanthropic resource for the Valley towns of Shelton, Ansonia, Derby, Oxford and Seymour. United Way supports programs and organizations focusing on youth, families, and people in crisis.

‘Fair and equitable recommendations’

Board Chairman Fred Ortoli praised the work of the Allocations Committee, noting members spend a great deal of time ensuring that their work helps to meet the needs of the community, but that there are never enough dollars to meet all the needs.

"The Allocations Committee does a tremendous job in making fair and equitable recommendations, and the board appreciates all the volunteer time that goes into the process,” Ortoli said.
