Shelton foundation distributes bikes to kids in need

The Shelton-based Foundation for Life is seeking help to provide 500 bicycles and helmets to underprivileged children in the region this year.

People and organizations can become a sponsor in the seventh annual Bikes for Kids campaign. One child will receive a bike and helmet for each $60 donation.

Larger donations allow the contributor to participate in a distribution event and receive recognition. At least one give-away event is planned for the Shelton area this year.

Bikes for Kids is intended to allow inner-city kids to explore their communities and to stay active and healthy. In 2012, the nonprofit organization distributed almost 400 bikes in Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island.

The Foundation for Life raises the funds, and purchases and transports the bikes and helmets to free, family-oriented events at venues such as sports facilities. It was founded in 2006 by Paul and Mindee Blanco of Barnum Financial Group of Shelton, an office of MetLife.
