Shelton man graduates from Army School of Advanced Military Studies

U.S. Army Maj. Michael Elliott Filanowski, who is from Shelton, has graduated from the Army’s School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Filanowski was born and raised in Shelton and is a 2000 Shelton High School graduate.

The “rigorous” graduate school has a small student body that includes members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces, various U.S. government agencies, and allied military forces.

Graduates earn master’s degrees in military art and science and are colloquially known as “Jedi Knights.”

The school educates future U.S. military leaders, teaching them to be agile, adaptive and to think critically at the strategic and operational levels to solve complex problems.

Various senior military leaders have recognized the contributions of SAMS graduates in supporting global contingency operations.
