Shelton surgeon to be honored for helping women battling cancer
A Shelton surgeon will be honored during the St. Vincent’s Swim Across the Sound’s first Celebrating Women event on Thursday.
Dr. Anthy Demestihas will be recognized for her commitment and service to under-served women with breast issues as well as her support of Swim Across the Sound.
The Celebrating Women event will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 10 at the Brooklawn Country Club, 500 Algonquin Road, Fairfield. All proceeds will benefit the Swim Across the Sound’s breast cancer prevention screening, education and support programs.

‘Contributed much to our community’
Celebrating Women will recognize and embrace female breast cancer survivors, along with their loved ones, physicians and medical professionals who helped to treat and support them during their journey.
Lyn McCarthy, St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation executive director, said the event “allows us to celebrate healthcare professionals such as Dr. Anthy Demestihas, a surgeon who has contributed so much to our community by giving patients the chance to live productive and rewarding lives after a cancer diagnosis.”
Speaker combines humor and motivation
The keynote speaker will be Eileen Kaplan, author of “Laughter is the Breast Medicine.” Kaplan is a cancer survivor, awareness advocate and mentor, who is well known for her talks on wellness.
As a motivational speaker, Kaplan engages her audience with humor while discussing the lifestyle changes necessary for combating all types of cancer. She focuses on the need to have a good attitude and positive thinking when dealing with the disease.
