St. Mary’s Church in Derby, dedicated in 1852, is the mother parish of St. Joseph Church in Shelton.

“We have a historical and emotional connection,” said Monsignor Christopher Walsh, pastor of St. Joseph.

The churches are in two different Roman Catholic dioceses — the Diocese of Bridgeport for St. Joseph, and the Archdiocese of Hartford for St. Mary’s.

There are two other Catholic churches in Shelton. They are St. Lawrence Parish on Shelton Avenue, founded in the 1950s, and St. Margaret Mary Church on Donovan Lane (off Long Hill Avenue), built in the 1960s.
