Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti presented this year\u2019s Constitution Week Proclamation to Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter Regent Patricia King plus six Shelton chapter members. This proclamation marks the 229th anniversary of the framing of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, PA in 1787. Mayor Lauretti reminded us that our Constitution is the cornerstone of our freedoms American colonists fought, sacrificed and died to establish and preserve the freedoms now guaranteed to us by the Constitution of the United States. Regent King thanked the Mayor on behalf of all the members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She mentioned the tradition of celebrating Constitution Week was begun by the DAR in 1955. She said "This is the 61st anniversary of Constitution Week, with the first proclamation issued by President Eisenhower on Aug. 19, 1955. I'm pleased that this tradition has continued, which celebrates the Sept. 17, 1787 signing of our U. S. Constitution." The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. The DAR is a women\u2019s service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education and patriotism. Any woman over 18 who can prove an ancestor served in the American Revolution is a prospective member. For more information on the DAR visit sarahriggshumphreysDAR.org.
