Hundreds gathered Saturday for the Relay for Life of Shelton and the Naugatuck Valley at Veterans Memorial Park (Riverwalk), raising money for the American Cancer Society. (Photos by Brad Durrell) The Relay raises funds by having teams and individuals walk around a track, with the support of sponsors, for up to 24 consecutive hours. The event includes ceremonies for cancer survivors and those who have succumbed to the disease. Teams also set up tents with booths to sell items — such as food, clothing and art — to raise money for the nonprofit American Cancer Society. The hot weather didn’t discourage the participants and visitors from helping the cause, with some people using umbrellas to block out the bright sun during daylight hours.
