A Shelton-based dog club played a major role in helping the Newtown Police Department get a new K-9 member. The Trap Falls Kennel Club (TFKC) raised more than $14,000 for the purchase and training of the dog. Saint Michael (called "Saint\u201d for short) was sworn in as a K-9 member of the department on Sept. 19. The 2-year old German shepherd came from Hungary. Taxpayer money and town budgets usually are not earmarked for police dogs, but the canines work tirelessly with their human handlers in tracking criminals down, and in search-and-rescue and search-and-recovery missions. Other kennel clubs assisted effort TFKC officials reached out to other kennel clubs across Connecticut to help with this fund-raising effort. Newtown Kennel Club and Farmington Kennel Club were among the many clubs who contributed to the Newtown K-9 Fund. The American Kennel Club's Reunite division matched funding to help make the purchase and training of \u201cSaint\u201d a reality.
