Webb Mountain Discovery Zone\u2019s registration is open for Discovery Summer, a half-day summer program of nature discoveries and adventures for youngsters in preschool through fifth grade. Whether participants will be singing songs, scooping for critters in ponds, creating nature crafts, searching for slugs and salamander or listening at story time along the trails, the program is designed to keep kids busy and engaged, organizers said. Webb Mountain Discovery Zone is an outdoor nature and education preserve in Monroe, close to the Shelton border. Digital cameras and theme days New features being introduced this year in the Discovery Summer program include the use of digital cameras and binoculars, the integration of theme days, as well as a series of new lessons, activities and crafts to suit a range of ages. There will be three separate programs running parallel to each other for children entering preschool and kindergarten; first and second grades; and third, fourth and fifth grades. Each of the five-day weekly sessions runs from 9 a.m.-noon and costs $140 for the first child registering, and $125 for each additional child in a family. Preserve covers 171 acres Webb Mountain Discovery Zone, at 71 Webb Circle in Monroe, opened in 2007 to promote outdoor exploration and learning in a fun, hands-on environment. The Discovery Zone has easy-to-walk trails of over four miles on 171 acres, with 28 learning stations and a self-directed scavenger hunt. The Discovery Zone entrance is separate from Webb Mountain Park.
