Firefighters battle late-night blaze at Latex factory in Shelton

The fire was in the back of the large factory  complex at 510 River Road, which is near the intersection with Constitution Boulevard South.

As of about 5:30 a.m. at the scene, firefighters are beginning to clean up their equipment. Dozens of fire apparatus from multiple departments were at the scene.

There have been reports of a few firefighters being injured, including one with a broken shoulder. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

Also present were personnel and vehicles from the Fairfield County HazMat Unit and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The factory is near the Housatonic River.

Emergency crews closed River Road in the vicinity to aid firefighting efforts, although the road is likely to open sometime this morning.

Fire in 2001 destroyed its Ansonia factory

Latex International, also known as Latex Foam Products, moved to Shelton after a major fire in 2001 destroyed its factory in downtown Ansonia.

Latex International makes latex foam mattresses as well as rubber latex used by other companies in mattresses, pillows and bed toppers. According to the company’s website, it uses Talalay material (molded pieces of latex foam rubber) in its production process, and is only factory in the United States to do so.

The company recently filed for bankruptcy.
