Two men charged with stealing packages from outside Shelton houses
Two New Haven men have been arrested for allegedly stealing packages delivered to people’s homes in Shelton during the holiday season. The packages allegedly were taken after being left outside the houses by delivery companies.
On Dec. 16 at about noon, Shelton police responded to Meadow Lake Drive for a larceny complaint.
The complainant reported to police that he saw a green pickup truck park on the street with two occupants inside. Police said the complainant then watched the driver exit the vehicle, take a package from the porch of a residence, and drive away.
Shelton police officer Jesse Butwell located the truck shortly after the incident was reported to police. Butwell conducted a motor vehicle stop on Meadow Street, by William Street.
Several packages with Shelton addresses were located inside the truck when it was pulled over, according to police.
“This is another example of the police and the public working together as a team,” said Shelton Police Lt. Robert Kozlowsky.
Multiple larceny and conspiracy charges
The driver of the truck, Jose Santini, 35, of New Haven was charged with three counts of sixth-degree larceny, three counts of conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny, possession of drug paraphernalia, and several motor vehicle charges.
The passenger in the truck, Alejandro Guzman, 42, of New Haven, was charged with three counts of sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny.
Both are being held on a $10,000 bond and are scheduled to appear Dec. 17 in state Superior Court in Derby.
How to handle package deliveries
Police are reminding people if they are having packages delivered, they should:
— Request delivery to the store itself and pick up the item there.
— Have the package delivered to their work address or to the courier's pickup station rather than their home.
— Schedule delivery for a day that they know they will be home, or a relative or friend will be home.
— Require a signature upon receipt for deliveries.
