A man from eastern Connecticut has been arrested for his alleged role in a fatal boating accident on the Housatonic River in Shelton three months ago. Burt W. Hamilton, 54 of 153 Palmer Road, Chaplin, has been charged with first-degree reckless boating, failure to maintain proper lookout, and speed in excess of slow-no-wake zone. He was arrested March 22 by state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) environmental conservation police (known as EnCon). Hamilton is set to appear in Derby Superior Court on April 1. Accident occurred at Sunnyside The charges stem from a Dec. 7, 2012 fatal boating accident on the Housatonic River in Shelton. In the accident, according to DEEP officials, Hamilton's boat collided with a dock piling while Hamilton was trying to return the boat to Sunnyside Boat Ramp in Shelton. During the accident, a passenger on Hamilton's boat, Donald Bessette, also of Chaplin, fell overboard and subsequently drowned, DEEP officials said. The investigation conducted by EnCon's Boating Accident Reconstruction Unit determined that Bessette was allegedly ejected from the boat when it collided with the dock piling, DEEP officials said.
