Two New York state men have been arrested for allegedly stealing items from a charity drop-off bin in Shelton. On April 11 at about 8 p.m., Shelton police were called to the Shelton Square Shopping Center, 898 Bridgeport Ave., on a report of a theft from the Kid-U-Cation donation bin. A witness reported to police that he was watching two men take clothes from the bin and they were loading it into a van. Officers arrived at the scene and located the van, which was packed with donated clothing from the bin, according to a Shelton Police Department press release. Police said operating the van was Joaquin Gonzales, 39, of Lindenhurst, N.Y., and the passenger was Mardo Pineda, 23, of Copiague, N.Y. The men were not affiliated with the charity organization, police said. Both arrested on larceny charges The release stated that Gonzales was unable to produce a valid insurance card for the van and he did not have a valid license. Gonzales was arrested and charged with sixth-degree larceny, operating a vehicle with no insurance, and operating a vehicle without a license.Pineda was also arrested and charged with sixth-degree larceny. Both men were released on a written promise to appear in court and given a court date of April 27 in state Superior Court in Derby. Shelton Police Department members have received several reports of thefts from the charity bin during past months.
