A fire on Sunday night at a cottage on Indian Well Road was at the same structure that was badly damaged by fire four days earlier. The second fire also occurred at 143 Indian Well Road in a small, one-story home along the Housatonic River. It is located in The Maples, a waterfront community near Indian Well State Park. There has been some confusion on the home’s address, including by this newspaper (we have reported it as 145 Indian Well Road). The initially fire on Wednesday, Feb. 18 essentially gutted the part of the cottage near the water. A dog died in the blaze. No occupants or firefighters were injured. Shelton Fire Marshal James Tortora said the Sunday night fire may have been caused by “rekindling” from the previous fire, but the exact cause has not been determined. Limited new damage Tortora said the cottage had been so badly damaged by the first fire that the second one really didn’t cause much more damage. The cottage is expected to be demolished due to the extensive damage. The first fire was caused by the occupant leaving wood stove ashes in a plastic container outside on the porch, up against the house, according to Tortora.
