Collection for Sandy victims to be held at this year's Thanksgiving game.
The administration and athletic directors of Shelton and Derby High Schools have decided to remind folks of the true meaning of Thanksgiving at this year’s football game.
At the Thanksgiving football game gate, at Shelton's Finn stadium, they will be collecting gift cards and cash donations for local victims of Sandy.
Shelton High Headmaster Beth Smith, Derby Principal Greg Galliard, John Niski, Shelton Athletic Director, and Joe Orazietti, Derby Athletic Director, decided on the collection during the annual Thanksgiving Football Game planning meeting on Friday, Nov. 16.
Smith came up with the idea after speaking with Foran High School principal, John Barile, at a conference this week.
“Mr. Barile communicated to me that he had several students who were homeless and literally lost everything,” Smith said. “I thought it would be a great idea if we did a collection at our annual Thanksgiving game. Derby and Shelton communicate the importance of community service and giving back to others.”
Smith and Gallaird will be distributing the gift cards to the principals at Jonathan Law and Foran High Schools. Both schools currently have several families who are homeless due to storm damage. Anyone who would like to donate cash or gift cards may do so by bringing them to the Shelton High School main office sometime next week or donate them at the gate at the Shelton-Derby Thanksgiving football game.
“We are a rivalry on one day, during one game, for two hours,” Smith said. “Other than that, Shelton and Derby stick together and support one another's endeavors. On Thanksgiving Day we will gather in unity to help our neighbors.”
Ideas for gift cards include gift cards to local restaurants, American express gift cards, Walmart gift cards, etc.
