Shelton school calendar approved for 2014-15; First day will be Sept. 2
The Shelton Board of Education (BOE) has approved a school calendar for the upcoming 2014-15 academic year, which includes a two-day holiday in February for Presidents Day and a five-day spring break in April.
In addition, school will begin on the Tuesday after Labor Day, which is Sept. 2.
In those respects, the new school year calendar is similar to the schedule for this year.
The last day of school for the next academic year tentatively is set for Thursday, June 11, 2015.
The BOE unanimously approved the calendar at its Feb. 26 meeting (see a calendar summary below). Shelton is one of the few systems in the area that still begins school after Labor Day.
There have been regional and statewide efforts to try to get school systems to follow a uniform calendar, but that appears to be unlikely to happen in the near future.
Early dismissal days
The calendar has 16 early dismissal days. These include the Tuesday and Wednesday of Thanksgiving week (with no school on that Thursday and Friday), and the last four days of the school year from June 8 to 11.
School will be in session on Veterans Day in November.

Teachers will have three full days of professional development (training) and seven partial days (with different partial days for different grade blocks, so individual teachers will not attend all sessions).
The teacher professional development full days are Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 27 and 28, before school starts, and Tuesday, Nov. 4 (schools are closed for Election Day). The partial days are Nov. 25, Dec. 2, March 20 and 24, and April 24 and 28, and May 13.
