Shelton student is a Fairfield County winner in poster contest
Isabela Baghdady, a fifth grade student at St. Lawrence School in Shelton, was one of four Fairfield County winners in the 2012-13 Connecticut Fire Prevention Poster Contest.
She was honored with 32 other winners from around the state at an awards presentation and luncheon on March 27 in Cromwell.
At the event, Isabela was given a $100 savings bond and a framed “County Winner “ certificate. In attendance were her mother, Rosa Baghdady, and Shelton Fire Marshal James Tortora.
Prevent, Plan and Practice
Isabela’s poster outlines a few important aspects of fire safety. Using the slogan “Follow the Three “P’s!” for Prevent, Plan and Practice, her poster instructs people to not play with matches, have working smoke alarms, know emergency numbers, make an escape plan, and to practice the escape plan with the family.
Ted Pisciotta, Shelton Fire Department’s assistant chief of fire prevention, said Isabela “clearly understands and captures the important aspects of fire safety that everyone should consider. She obviously applied a great amount of careful thought and planning in developing her poster.”
Design to be in calendar, state Capitol display
Her poster will be printed in the 2014 Connecticut State Fire Prevention Calendar and will be on display during Fire Prevention Week at the state Capitol.
In January, Isabela had been presented an award as the fifth grade city winner in Shelton. Nearly 1,000 fourth and fifth grade students from all Shelton public and parochial schools participated in the competition.
Isabela’s poster, and the first place winning posters from each school in Shelton, are part of a portable poster art display that is being transported to various locations in the city.
Promoting fire safety awareness
The statewide contest is intended to develop fire safety awareness in youngsters and to encourage them to take that message home to their families. It is jointly sponsored by Connecticut FAIR Plan, representing the insurance industry in the state; the Connecticut Fire Marshals Association; Connecticut Board of Education, and State Fire Marshal’s Office.
