School’s drama department is finding success

Students at St. Lawrence School in Shelton are preparing for the upcoming spring production of Seussical, Jr. This play comes off the success of last year's performance of Annie, Jr.

This is the third year the school has produced a spring show under the direction of Jennifer Kaye, the current kindergarten teacher with the assistance of Laura Loso, fifth grade homeroom teacher and music instructor, as well as Lenore Daninhirsch, fourth grade homeroom teacher.

Kaye began the drama department four years ago, with a small cabaret program with songs and dances designed to fit the students' abilities. The program has since grown to include full- scale productions.

"I grew up doing shows here in Shelton with the Youth CONNection and the Shelton High School drama club ... I wanted to showcase a drama program doing a full scale show rather than a cabaret-style show again," Kaye said.

The productions have grown from 15 students participating in the first show to more than 30 students involved in this year's show. In addition to performing and stage crew, students also assisted building props, creating costumes and painting sets under the direction of Loso.
