Five Shelton robotics teams competed Saturday during the ninth annual Shelton Circus Robotix FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League Regional Qualifying Tournament. During the 2011-12 FLL competition, the Shelton Intermediate School Robotic Revolution team dominated the global innovation competition with its “Smart Sticker” invention for food safety. This year, the students, who came from Shelton Intermediate School, Perry Hill School and St. Joseph School, were charged with inventing a product that can improve the quality of life for senior citizens. The regional qualifying tournament, held at Shelton High School, featured 25 teams from all across southern Connecticut. More than 225 middle school students participated in the daylong event, which highlighted their efforts in STEM education for which they have been preparing over the past 12 weeks during after-school work sessions. This year’s theme, Senior Solutions, required students to prepare real-world solutions for today’s senior citizen population. Innovative solution presentations ranged from automated medicine dispensers to GPS tracking devices for lost items. Shelton teams included Perry Hill Dominators, Perry Hill Predators, Shelton Intermediate School Thundering Tigers, Shelton Intermediate School Robotic Revolution, and St. Joseph School Challengers. Students also worked with mentors and teachers to design and build Lego programmable robots to complete specific “missions” related to senior solutions. Teams were judged on robot design and effectiveness, project presentation skills, and overall teamwork capabilities. Volunteer adult mentors and judges from local area corporations, including Pitney Bowes, UTC Sikorsky, OEM Controls, and Cybec, volunteered their time and expertise to evaluate the students’ designs, performance and skills. The Shelton High School Robotics Team #230 hosted the competition. This was one of six FLL regional qualifying events in Connecticut.
