Obituary: Matthew J. Skurat, 72, of Shelton
He is the loving son of Helen Churma Skurat of Shelton and the late Matthew Skurat.
Besides his beloved wife and mother, he is survived by his daughters, Karen and her husband James Oram, Gretchen and her husband Stephen Gifford and his son Christopher and his wife Carla Skurat. He leaves grandchildren Danielle Gifford and Jake and Ryan Skurat. He was predeceased by his sister Nancy Skurat Wannagot, as well as, his best friend and brother-in-law Daniel Wannagot.
Matthew started his career at for Farrel’s Corporation in Ansonia. He then became an admission coordinator at Hewitt Memorial Hospital in Shelton for 25 years and continued his career at Lord Chamberlain Nursing and Rehab Center in Stratford until his retirement in 2005.
Matthew was a member of the Echo Hose Company # 1 Fire Department for over 50 years, and served as their secretary for 49 years. He was also a member of the Pine Rock Company # 4 Fire Department and served as a Chaplain for the Shelton Fire Department.
He was a retired deacon at St. Margaret Mary Church and was actively involved in many church activities and groups over the years. He was a first degree Knight of Columbus and recently became a Justice of the Peace for the City of Shelton. He was also an avid NY Yankee Fan.
He was proud of his volunteer and fundraising activities including his annual Festival of Trees, held to benefit the children of the Echo Hose Fire Department as well as locally hospitalized children.
He took great pride in his children and loved his family.He enjoyed taking care of his home and yard, and was proud to call it his.
Always an animal lover, he no doubt has joined his recently departed chocolate lab companion Behr again. He also leaves his rescued feline Lizzy.
Well known in the community, Matt will be strongly missed by a host of family, friends, and acquaintances. His absence will leave an emptiness in all of our lives.
Friends may greet his family on Monday from 3 to 7 PM in the Riverview Funeral Home 390 River Road Shelton. On Tuesday his funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Margaret Mary Church, Shelton. Burial will follow in Mt.St. Peter Cemetery, Derby.
