Over the last several weeks the story of embezzlement of City funds has been unfolding. While there are reasons to criticize the administration regarding the handling of the investigation, what is even more important is how we move forward.
Once the method by which the money was stolen is determined it is vital that procedures be put in place to prevent this type of embezzlement from ever happening again. I would urge the Board of Aldermen to assume their role as the fiduciary body of the City and either hire an outside firm to review the events and make recommendations or bring together a small committee of knowledgeable citizens to review the events and make recommendations. You may ask why should this be done by the Aldermen. It is because they are ultimately responsible for City finances. They approve budgets and they must ensure that our tax dollars are spent according to the budget they approve. The Mayor oversees the administration of the city while the Aldermen act as our board of directors.
