FEMA deadline approaching

Many people suffered losses during Storm Sandy, from minor damage to major damage to their homes and property.

Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are reminding residents who have losses that they should register with FEMA, and the deadline to do so is fast approaching. Registration must be done by Dec. 31.

Residents can register online any time at DisasterAssistance.gov, or with a smartphone or other Web-enabled device at m.fema.gov. People can also register by phone any time by calling FEMA at 800-621-3362.

Disaster assistance for homeowners and renters can include grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses not met by insurance or other assistance programs.

Residents who register for disaster assistance with another agency are not automatically registered with FEMA. One FEMA agent put it this way: “The only way to get in line to receive FEMA funds is to register with FEMA.”

People who have losses are encouraged to register and to remind their friends and relatives who have suffered losses due to Sandy to do the same.
