Nutmegger Festival

This Sunday, Shelton residents have a chance to see and taste what Connecticut agriculture is all about. You may be surprised.

The Nutmegger Cheese and Wine Festival is this Sunday, Sept. 23 at Jones Family Farms offers a chance to try the homegrown artisanal delights. About two dozen vendors will be offering samples of their food and drink. These products didn't travel hundreds of miles on trucks to a supermarket. The ingredients are no mystery. It's all a result of local ingredients, sunshine and Yankee ingenuity.

As Sheltonites, we know just how lucky we are with our local farms but this is a chance to see what other parts of the state have to offer.

Even better, ticket sales support two great causes. Part of the proceeds will support the Working Lands Alliance, with champions policy and education initiatives to protect Connecticut's farmland and the event will also support The Valley Initiative to Advance Health and Learning in Schools (VITAHLS).

VITAHLS is a great pilot program, battling childhood obesity with simple steps and education in our schools. It's a model for the rest of the country and something we all can support.

It's also a beautiful time of year and this event is rain or shine.
