LETTER: A new Shelton City Hall would pay no taxes on prime land

To the Editor:

As I usually disagree with Mayor Mark Lauretti, I was pleased by his comment that “small businesses such as Lighthouse [Rum Cakes] create the most new jobs.”

Alas, this harmony was short lived, as he then spoke of the “future development, including the possibility of City Hall being relocated nearby.”

This possibility of building a new City Hall in downtown Shelton should be nipped in the bud. City Hall would pay no taxes on the prime downtown acreage.

The displaced businesses as well as new ones should be the focus of development plans — and that needs to include the input of the Matto and Bialek families and others with a stake in building downtown.
