Obituary: George Vano, 88, of Stratford

George Vano, age 88, lifelong resident of Stratford, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Bishop Wicke Health Center in Shelton.

Born in Bridgeport in 1926, he graduated from Stratford High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an airplane propeller mechanic. During his service abroad he had an opportunity to tour Europe, and on one occasion to witness the prosecution of Hermann Goering at the Nuremberg Trials. He was employed both by the Singer Company and later by Harvey Hubbell in their Wiring Division where he retired in 1990.

Over the years, family and friends benefited from his exceptional mechanical abilities. He could repair everything from appliances to lawn mowers, snow blowers and garage door openers. Most importantly, he was generous with his time and talents and was always available to lend a hand. He loved working with wood, metal and stone, leaving behind many special creations.

A man of simple tastes and pleasures, he was an avid fan of UConn Women’s basketball and enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels in his backyard. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley in 2007.

He leaves behind his daughter Pamela Ghione and her husband Charles, his son Ken Vano and his wife Lori, and beloved grandchildren Brittany and Brent Ghione and Ryan Vano, all of Shelton.
