Teacher to challenge DeLauro in race for Congress that includes part of Shelton
A former math teacher and track coach from Stratford has announced he will challenge longtime Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro for Congress in the Third District, which includes a part of Shelton.
James Brown has taught in the Stratford public schools and was a track-and-field and cross country coach. He is seeking the Republican nomination.
“I am running for Congress because I am concerned with the direction of our nation,” Brown said. “Our debt is astronomical, the federal government is out of control, and people are aggravated with how out of touch the federal government has become.”
Wants private sector solutions
He said he would focus on the size of government and national debt if elected.
“We need to limit the size of the federal government, which has far exceeded its constitutional mandate, by having limited federal government with well-defined laws,” he said. “Debt is now over half of the GDP.
“We need to encourage the private sector to innovate and prove that there is a more viable private sector solution to our economic challenges,” he said
Brown additionally called for a repeal of Obamacare and the educational common core standards, which he called “federal mandates that have hurt working families.”
Challenges longtime incumbent
DeLauro is in her 12th term, having been first elected in 1990.
The Third Congressional District includes New Haven and surrounding towns, and is considered a strong district for Democrats.
DeLauro has won re-election by large margins in recent years, often only being opposed by a token challenger. She lives in New Haven.
‘I am a regular guy’
Brown noted he does not hold elective office now. “I am not a career politician; I am a regular guy who felt compelled to run for office after seeing how out of control our government has become.
“At the end of the day, I want people to know that they have a choice between following the same road we are continuing down, or limit our government to stay within its means and promote opportunity again,” he said. “This election is not about me, it is about our country. You have a vote for liberty.”.
The candidate’s background
Brown was born and raised in Newtown, graduating from Newtown High in 1987. In addition to Stratford, he has taught school in Bridgeport and Texas during his 21-year career as a teacher. He’s been an athletic coach for 19 years.
He has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Connecticut and a master’s degree in math education from Southern Connecticut State University.

Shelton has two members of Congress
The city of Shelton is divided between the Third District, represented by DeLauro, and the Fourth District, represented by fellow Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Himes.
The Third District is centered in New Haven County, while the Fourth District includes most of Fairfield County.
