On more than 276 acres of land in the northwestern Connecticut town of Cornwall, the turrets of a stone chateau peek out from the surrounding treetops. The property, known as Cornwall Castle, makes the fables of children’s fairytales look like a reality with its surrounding brooks, ponds and waterfalls. Now the real-life castle is for sale for $6.5 million

According to a press release by Klemm Real Estate, the home was “the vision" of New York socialite, Charlotte Bronson Hunnewell Martin. Hunnewell Martin published several volumes of French poetry she translated into English, according to the New York Historical Society, as well as four volumes of letters penned by her grandmother.

Construction began on the home — which Hunnewell Martin designed as a chateau — in 1921 shortly following her divorce from her first husband, Victor Sorchan, according to The New York Times. She married Dr. Walton Martin, the chief surgeon at New York’s St. Luke’s Hospital, who the Cornwall Historical Society notes purchased land in the Cornwall countryside after being introduced to the area by a friend.

The home on 61 Castle Road in Cornwall, Conn. sits on more than 276 acres of land and has five waterfalls on its property.

Following her divorce, Hunnewell Martin “planned the castle as a counterpoint to her New York City brownstones,” according to the Cornwall Historical Society. The property was designed and built by Edward C. Dean, the architect behind the renovation of New York City's Turtle Bay Gardens townhouses — a property Hunnewell Martin purchased and worked with Dean to overhaul.

She commissioned Dean again for the Cornwall Castle, and what resulted was an 18-room European-style manor on 61 Castle Road that has seven bedrooms, five full bathrooms and eight fireplaces spread across more than 8,700 square feet of living space.

The listing notes that the property was restored and renovated by the current owners to add modern features to its “old-world charm,” which include 20-foot ceilings in the living room, mahogany paneling in the dining room and marble floors in the reception hall.

On the home’s hundreds of acres of land, there’s a heated pool, along with a four-bedroom gatehouse, a two-bedroom caretaker’s apartment and a pool house, according to the listing. Additionally, there is a six-bay heated garage, four-stall stable and a licensed helipad on the grounds.

The Cornwall Castle isn’t the only fairytale-like residence to hit the market in Connecticut recently. In Nov. 2021, a castle in Woodstock with 75 acres of land was listed for $35 million and featured on viral Instagram and TikTok account Zillow Gone Wild for its sky-high spires and moat that wraps around the residence. A 7,000 square-foot castle in Bridgewater hit the market in Connecticut in July 2021 for $4.5 million.
