Salisbury estate with beachfront on Twin Lakes listed for nearly $8M

Adventures in the Wilderness” by author W. H. H. Murray introduced the idea of camping in the wilderness to city dwellers when it was published in 1869. The summer that followed brought throngs of tourists to the Adirondacks in what became known as “Murray’s Rush.”

Around the same time, William West Durant’s railroad baron father was looking to expand into the Adirondacks and tasked his son with developing a “retreat for entertaining wealthy investors and property developers,” according to a history of the Adirondacks. Durant’s designs timed with “Murray’s Rush,” the Adirondack history notes, and resulted in what is known as the Great Camps of the Adirondacks, the “expansive lodging compounds” built in an “Adirondack rustic” architectural style that aimed to offer “rustic yet luxurious retreats for the Gilded Age elite.”
