Thirty years after the release of the original, "Hocus Pocus 2" will see the three lead actors reprise their roles at a very different place in their career. Disney has just release their trailer for the new film, which will debut on Disney+ in September.
The original three stars, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, are going to be coming back to reprise their roles as the trio of witches who have a diabolical quest to achieve eternal youth by sucking the souls out of children. While Midler was already Hollywood royalty when the first film was released in 1993, Parker and Najimy have cemented their superstardom in the years since, with Parker leading the "Sex & the City" franchise on HBO and Najimy voicing Peggy Hill on "King of the Hill" and one of the only human characters in Pixar's "WALL-E."
Like the original," Hocus Pocus 2" will take place in Salem, Mass., the site of much witchy debauchery over the years. In the trailer, the trio light the Black Flame Candle once again, with cries of “Lock up your children!” and “Yes, Salem, we’re back!
We can probably expect another musical performance if the trailer is anything to go by: The trio stops by what looks like an outdoor Halloween carnival — and it’s not like the original movie exists in a vacuum. The staffers recognize the trio, and one asks if they’re looking for the stage. Midler replies with a very promising “Always.” We’ve already seen that the trio will do a cover of “The Bitch is Back” by Elton John, per a sneak peek of the film that dropped at Disney+’s upfronts presentation in May. New characters are also joining the sequel, including Tony Hale as mayor of Salem and Sam Richardson in an unspecified role (both actors are known for appearing in HBO's "Veep").
The sequel to the much-loved classic will drop on Disney+.
