Third party gaming controllers once had a reputation – a well-earned one, frankly – for being cheap and inferior to those offered by the Nintendos, Sonys, and Microsofts of the world. But in recent years, 8Bitdo has become the welcome exception, crafting wireless controllers that look and feel great, are packed with features, and work with several different platforms.

Hot off the heels of the brand’s new Pro 2 controller (which is getting rave reviews), you can save a rare $5 today on the still-great SN30 Pro+, which looks like the unholy offspring of a Super Nintendo controller and a PlayStation DualShock. Right out of the box, it’ll connect to your Mac, PC, Switch, or Android device, and will function just like any other controller. It also works unofficially with iOS if you put it into Mac mode, and I’ve used mine (a slightly different model) successfully with a ton of Apple Arcade games. For PlayStation owners, it won’t connect directly to a PS4 or PS5, but you can use it to play PlayStation games over PS Remote Play on another device. In fact, I successfully beat Bloodborne streaming from my PS5 to my iPad with an 8Bitdo controller, which ought to tell you something.

Why invest in a multi-platform controller? Sometimes, you need an extra gamepad when friends come over for Mario Kart. Other times, you just want better controls on a mobile game, or feel like leaning back with a controller while you game on your PC. Now you don’t need to buy three separate controllers; this one will do it all.

If you’re into tinkering, you can remap the buttons, tweak the sensitivity of the sticks and triggers, dial in the vibration, and even program macros. Frankly, I’ve never touched any of that stuff, but still consider my 8Bitdo controller to be one of the best things I bought last year. $45 is the best price Amazon’s ever listed on this particular model, all murdered out in black.
