Few accoutrements of city life are uglier, but more necessary, than a window air conditioner. For months at a time, bulky steel boxes sit in the recesses of closets, leading many city-dwellers to think, "Maybe I should get rid of this thing." And then the first 90-degree day of the year hits, and nobody cares what an A\/C unit looks like, so long as it cools the breath of Hades that most people simply call "non-HVAC air." But Windmill, a startup in the air conditioner space, asks, "What if an air conditioner could work well\u00a0and look good?" In fact, Windmill manages to do both \u2014 and for under $400. Launched in June 2020, Windmill sold out within 48 hours and quickly piled up a 10,000-person waiting list. Thankfully, the people behind Windmill saw to it that the smart A\/C device would be back for summer 2021, and that's the case now. Aside from looking a whole lot sleeker than a standard A\/C unit, Windmill also works well: The 8,300 BTU unit is powerful enough to cool a 350-square-foot room, or a decently sized living room It hums at 50 decibels, which is more like a refrigerator than lawnmower An antimicrobial-protected mesh filter helps blocks dust and larger air particles A second, replaceable activated carbon filter helps protect against odors, fumes, volatile organic compounds App-enabled control lets you to monitor and control your A\/C from anywhere Functionally, Windmill also operates a bit differently from your run-of-the-mill window A\/C: It circulates air upward, rather than forward, for better cooling. So while you might not be able to just plop in front of the window to cool off quickly, you also don't need to plop in front of the window to cool off. The price on Windmill is also nice: It's $395, which is comparable to, if not cheaper than, window A\/C units of similar power. You can easily pay more than $500 for an A\/C unit of similar cooling power that ends up looking like Megatron got his head stuck in your window. The Windmill AC is available directly from Windmill Air's website and ships in two to three days. It's also available at Home Depot and PC Richard & Son.
