American Legion: Orange sweeps Shelton
The Orange Post 127 American Legion team notched a road sweep over Shelton Post 16 the easy way on Saturday morning.
In the first game of a scheduled Zone II doubleheader, Orange right-hander Rohan Patel dominated Shelton to power Post 127 to a 4-0 six-inning victory. The contest was halted after six frames, after Shelton leadoff batter Chris Kanios was ejected for throwing his equipment following a strikeout to start the inning.
Shelton, which tumbled to 1-4, did not have enough players to continue the game as its lone bench player had subbed into the game in the fifth inning. Reentry is not allowed in American Legion, unlike in high school baseball which is played under federation rules.
Post 16 then faced a shortage of players for game two and was forced to forfeit.
Patel, a rising senior at Amity, struck out 10 and allowed just one hit — an opposite field single to David Wells leading off the bottom of the fourth.
Orange (3-3) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, with Pat Winkel and Al Smith tagging Kanios, the Shelton starter, for RBI doubles. Smith then came around to score on a wild pitch.
Post 127 added a single run in the fifth, when Smith doubled and scored on Max Scheps' RBI single.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow at Brinley Field in Orange at 4 p.m.
