Boys basketball: Governors defeat Gaels in SCC playoffs
The No. 3 seed Wilbur Cross basketball team outscored host Shelton, 40-15, over the final 14 minutes Thursday night to earn an 80-50 Southern Connecticut Conference playoff first-round win over the Gaels at the Bob Saulsbury Gym in New Haven.
Shelton trailed 36-30 at halftime and managed to cut the lead to 40-35 before the Governors, who now have an 18-3 record went on their scoring tear.
Senior Robert Durant led the winners with 24 points and also had 13 rebounds. Durant got help from Jayden Valderamma, who added 19 points, while sophomore Kwane Taylor had 15.
Cross scored from long range all game long, making 11 three-pointers.
Jeff Stockmal was the only Gael in double figures. He scored 23 points and Kevin Robinson added nine. The loss left the No. 14 Gaels with a 10-11 record heading into the Class LL state tournament.
"We tried to be as patient as we could be in the first half," said Shelton coach Brian Gardiner. "We knew if we kept them within a single digit lead late in the game, we'd have a chance. It seemed to be going as planned until they took control of the game. Once that happened we couldn't stop them and I think our guys got frustrated.”
It was the third time this season that the Gaels have lost to the Governors.
