Boys basketball: Prep defeats Shelton Gaels in opener
Led by 24 points from senior guard Rich Kelly, the Fairfield Prep basketball team put six players in double figures on Monday night in a 107-57 win over Shelton High in the Gaels’ gym.
Prep, the defending Class LL state champions, broke the game open with a 41-point third quarter, taking a 44-29 halftime lead and expanding it to 85-39.
Joining Kelly, who made 8 of 10 shots including five 3-pointers, was junior center Patrick Harding, who had 19 points along with 14 rebounds; John Kelly, who had 16 points, and Matt Gerics and Philip Vlandis, who had 11 each.
Shelton was paced by 19 points from Casey Belade. Jeff Stockmal and Matt Terrasi had eight each.
The closest Shelton could get after falling behind early was eight, at 37-29, on a basket by Terrasi off a fast break with 3:11 to play in the second quarter. “I thought we played some fairly good defense in that quarter,” said Shelton coach Brian Gardiner. “But, once the second half started, they just pulled away and we couldn’t stay with them.”
It was the opening game for the pair of SCC schools. Shelton returns to action on Wednesday night when the Gaels play at Hamden.
