Coming off three wins to begin the season, Shelton High suffered a 90-84 loss at Masuk of Monroe.

Coach Tom Jurzynski and the Gaels had some positive takeaways, led by Korey Barber’s two individual firsts and Jai Goel, Matt Balcerzak, Barber and Matt Christiano clocking in at 3:42.27 in the 400-meter relay.

Barber won the 200 yard individual medley race with a time of 2:07.69 and took first in the 100 butterfly in 55.78.

“We raced really hard today,” said Jurzynski, adding the Gaels expected a tough challenge coming in “We’ve been swimming really well all year. We’re on the right track this year. I thought we would be able to keep it close. We hung around. It’s definitely good to see some top competition. They have a lot of good kids, they’re deep.”

Jurzynski noted that the Gaels had fastest times across the board, including Carson Rhodes and Kenny Walsh both finishing the 100 freestyle race in under one minute for the first time, both doing so easily.

Shelton was prepared to raise its game given the high level of competition, plus the fact some of the Gaels and Panthers swim together at the club level around high school season.

“They were ready to go today. It was just kind of a tall task,” Jurzynski said.

Masuk locked up the team win with two events to spare and swam exhibition the final two races.

Goel was Shelton’s fastest in the 200 freestyle race, making his final touch in 1:59.78, good for third.

Balcerzak was second in the 50, sprinting to the finish in 24.46.
