Boys volleyball: Shelton gets past Amity
The Shelton boys volleyball team came into the Amity gym on Friday with one thing on their mind, a 3-2 loss earlier in the week against East Hartford.
It was the first setback of the season for the Gaels and by their own estimation it was a game they should have put in the win column.
It was there for the taking but Shelton fell to 4-1 on the season. There would be no repeat performance against Amity as the Gaels methodically went about their business in a convincing 3-0 sweep, 25-12, 25-17 and 25-19.
Grant Fevirer was an unstoppable force at the net with 11 side out kills and seven digs to account for his effort. T.J. Nicholas made his presence felt in the front row with nine kills and Erik Kocur showed his all around game adding five kills and five digs for the Gaels.
It was all controlled by the setting abilities of Rhodric McCurdy who steered the offensive attack with 27 assists and seven digs to pace Shelton. The Spartans benefited from a little bit of luck as balls were deflected off the ceiling in game two putting Amity out in front 16-15.
Michael Scarpa came on to serve up the tie breaker and Patrick Devaney lent a hand in the front row as Shelton came back to prevail. Hunter Yocum and James Hunter played standout defense to put Amity away in the three game set.
Shelton will be at home on Monday for a huge SCC showdown with Cheshire.
