Boys volleyball: Shelton sweeps away Amity
The Shelton High boys’ volleyball team ran its current winning streak to seven matches and its over-all won-lost record to 12-1 by dispatching Amity Regional of Woodbridge, 3-0, on its home court on Monday afternoon.
The Gaels, currently second to unbeaten Ridgefield (13-0) in the CIAC Division 1 rankings, won by set scores of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-10 on Breast Cancer Awareness night.
Grant Fevrier, Eric Kocur and T.J. Nicholas combined for 18 kills (six each) while Rhodric McCurdy had 17 assists as the Gaels swept an opponent (including Amity once already) for the sixth time this season.
Fevier added eight service aces.
The Gaels are now within two wins of tying their victory total of 14 set last year, a season in which they reached the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) semifinals before losing to Xavier of Middletown.
Shelton also advanced to the quarter-final round of the Class L state tournament before bowing to Southington, 3-0.
On the schedule later this week are roads matches against Joel Barlow of Redding (on Thursday) and Cheshire (on Friday). The Gaels defeated Cheshire, 3-0, earlier this year including a 25-1 set win during the match.
Brett Southworth had four kills and six digs for the 3-10 Spartans.
