Boys volleyball: Shelton wins SCC title

The Shelton boys volleyball team claimed the SCC title for the first time since 2008 when they got by Xavier by a 3-1 margin on Friday night at the Murray Gymnasium.

The Gaels, 18-2 on the season, made it look easy in the first two games winning by wide margins of 25-16 and 25-15. Shelton was heads and shoulders above Xavier in the first two games with the front row of Grant Fevrier, T.J. Nicholas and Erik Kocur proving to be a dominant force.

Rhodric McCurdy steered the offense, with Mike Scarpa and Hunter Yocum controlling the middle of the floor. Patrick Devaney and Matt Wojslaw made their presence felt with the inspired play at the net.

The Xavier Falcons, 11-9 on the season, were not going down without a fight after they knocked off Cheshire 3-0 in the semifinals. It was the third appearance in the SCC final in the last four years for the Falcons and they put up a fight in game three.

The game three marathon went on with 12 ties before the Falcons escaped with a 25-21 win. Shelton had the opportunity to close this one out but left the door open long enough for Xavier to force a game four.

Game four took on the same atmosphere as game three as both teams struggled to kind consistency. Kocur got it done with a three-point service run late in the game to open up a 21-18 advantage. McCurdy closed the deal with a four point service for the 25-18 win.

Shelton is seeded third in the Class L state tournament and will host Greenwich High (7-9) on Monday night at Murray Gymnasium 7 p.m. The winner will face either Glastonbury High or Trumbull High in the second round on June 5.
