Connelly Construction clinches 2nd place

Connelly Construction clinched second place in the Valley Independent Softball League Division I with a dominating doubleheader sweep over Militia.

In the opener, second baseman Michael Smith sparked the Connelly defense that helped winning pitcher Matt Fanelli limit Militia to just four hits, as the Builders registered a 13-0 shutout.

Smith also contributed a pair of hits to the victor’s offense, as did Chris Dzienkiewicz, Josh Larue, James Homa, Rick and Dom Bailey. After spotting Militia a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap, Dom Bailey slugged a two-run homer as Connelly went ahead 3-1 in the fourth and then pulled away in the second half of the contest to claim a 13-1 triumph.

Rick Bailey led the offense with three hits, including a double and a triple. Tom Kieley went 3-for-3 while Mike Matosian, Josh Ezzo, Dennis Kieley, Dom Bailey and Smith added two base hits each.

Connelly continued its winning ways with another pair of wins over Kut-Rite Hair Shop. Rallying for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Builders eked out a 13-12 win in the opener.

After a wild first inning that had Kut-Rite emerge with a 7-6 lead, things settled down and saw Kut-Rite holding a 9-7 edge at the game’s halfway point.

Connelly plated three in the home half of the fourth to take its first lead, 10-9. The Builders maintained that slim edge until the top of the seventh, when Kut-Rite put up three to go ahead 12-10.

The Builders responded in kind as they got hits from James Homa, Chris Dzienkiewicz (a double), Rick Bailey (a triple) and Scott Prouty’s walk-off, two-out single to earn the hard-fought victory.

Homa’s three base hits were best for the victors. Smith, Prouty, Dennis and Tom Kieley added a pair of base hits each. Brian Valeria, who belted a triple, and Kris Harmeling topped Kut-Rite’s hit list with three apiece.

Connelly completed a sweep, taking a 4-1 lead after one and staying on top all the way in a 12-5 victory over Kut-Rite. Michael Smith enjoyed a 4-for-4 game at the plate to lead the winning offense. Rick Bailey belted a pair of doubles and a triple, Tom Kieley went 3-for-3 and Chris Dzienkiewiz had a double and a triple to aide the victors’ cause.

For Kut-Rite, Silva hammered a pair of triples, while Nick Lifrieri and Keith Maynard had two base hits each.

Fanelli earned the pitching win in both contests over Paul Raymond.

Kut-Rite rode a five-run first inning and a solid defensive effort that turned over four double plays to a 7-1 win over Boland’s Cafe in the opener of their doubleheader.

Tacking on single counters in the second and third, Kut-Rite built a 7-0 lead which they held until the bottom of the seventh when Boland’s plated its lone run.

Valeria and Harmeling notched a pair of hits apiece for the victors, while Carlos Diaz and Jamie Raymond each drove in two runs in the first.
