Football: Shelton Gaels roll over Amity Spartans
It took the Shelton High football team just two plays to take over the game on Friday at Edward Finn Stadium, as they went on to roll past SCC rival Amity High by a 45-7 margin.
Zach Tuskowski threw for three touchdown passes and backup quarterback Dave Wells took one to the house on a 65-yard blast to start the second half.
After the two teams traded punts to open the game, the Gaels’ Ron Hubbard recovered an Amity fumble on a punt return with 8:49 left in the first quarter. That opened the floodgates and Peter Hoff scored the first of his two touchdowns on the ground from a yard out.
On the first play of the next Amity possession, Keith Pryor stepped in front of the receiver intercepting the ball at the Spartans’ 18-yard line. Tuskowski dialed it up and threw a touchdown pass to Kevin Robinson, and with 7:32 left in the quarter it was a 14-0 lead.
Joe Zoppi booted a 33 yard field goal to go with his pair of PAT’s to up the margin to 17-0 by the end of the first quarter. Zoppi was a perfect six for six in extra points and provided Shelton with another offensive weapon.
Robinson caught his second touchdown pass of the game and Huff scored his second on the ground with a 7-yard blast. Tuskowski completed the first half scoring throwing his third touchdown of the game on a 35-yard strike to Anthony Schiavo for a 38-0 lead at the break.
On the second play of the second half, Wells burst around the corner for a 65-yard scamper into the end zone for the final Shelton score of the game.
Amity got on the board right at the end of the third quarter when Colin Beaulieu took it 26 yards to the end zone to account for the 45-7 final margin.
