Football: Shelton routs Guilford

The Shelton Gaels used a lighting quick offense to overcome an early 7-0 deficit as they defeated the Indians of Guilford by a 56-7 margin.

The Gaels had possession of the ball a total of six and a half minutes in the first half, running just 20 plays as they hung 42 points on the board before heading to the locker room at the break.

Guilford ran a methodical offense to move the chains up and down the field using up 17 and a half minutes to run 48 plays but time-after-time the Shelton defense had the final say.

Shelton was sparked by the return of Chris Kanios, who pulled in two passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Kevin Robinson caught three passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns but did most of his damage returning a 65-yard kickoff to set up the first Shelton touchdown and then hit pay dirt on a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Peter Hoff churned up 89 yards of real estate to spark the running game and his 37-yard touchdown jaunt with five minutes left in the half put Gaels out in front 35-7.

But what really got the ball rolling for the Gaels was the pinpoint passing of Zach Tuskowski, who threw a head shaking 14-of-15 completions for a robust 258 yards and five touchdown passes.

Sam Kirk pulled in four catches for 54 yards and one touchdown, with Anthony Shiavo being the fourth Shelton receiver to break the 50 yard mark in the game as he hauled in three catches for 59 yards.

Guilford came out with a 14-play 69-yard drive to start the game with Jack Jankura throwing an 11-yard touchdown to Casey Huffman on a drive that took five minutes off the clock.

The Indians never threatened again, as the Gaels defense kicked the door shut and threw away the key. Shelton is off to a hot start on the season going 3-0 at home but will now take to the road beginning with Notre Dame of West Haven (2-1) next Friday.
