Shelton coach LeAnne Bianchine’s girls’ volleyball teams are known for playing hard for every point and this year’s squad was no exception.

“Although we struggled this season, these girls never gave up and fought every game,” she said. “Just when our opponents thought they were winning in three sets we took them to five.”

Seniors Julia Krijgsman, Giovanna Gonzalez, Alexis Mauro and Karolina Martins guided the Gaelettes.

“Julia was an outside hitter and team captain,” Bianchine said of Krijgsman, who made the All-SCC team for the second straight season. “Her die-hard attitude and ability to fight through kept us alive throughout the season.

“Giovanna was a captain and right-side hitter. She is a great dedicated leader who was extremely supportive of her teammates.

“Alexis has grown unbelievably as a player,” Bianchine said of her middle hitter. “She made some awesome plays at the net and gave her all every game. Alexis has a great work ethic.

“Karolina was a defensive specialist. A fantastic student-athlete, she showed that intelligence in how she played.

“Our younger players have that same fire in them as our seniors. I’m looking forward to bringing that promise next season against all of our opponents.”
