Girls basketball: Spartans edge Gaelettes, 29-26
Molly Dragan converted one of two free throws with five seconds left on Friday night, giving the Amity High girls basketball its final lead at 27-26 as the Spartans went on to defeat Shelton High, 29-26, and capture the SCC’s Housatonic Division title at the Murray Memorial Gym in Shelton. It was the Gaels’ Senior Night.
The Spartans, who’ve won 13 of 19 games so far this year, pulled even at 26-26 on a short jumper by Elise Graham, who finished as the game’s high scorer with 12 points. Graham’s basket came with 1:07 remaining. Alexa Gibbs made two free throws with one second left to produce the final score.
Shelton came back from a 16-9 halftime deficit to go ahead 20-18 when Nicole Roberts hit a pair of free throws with 58 seconds left in the third quarter.
After falling behind, 24-23 with a little over three minutes to play, the 12-7 Gaelettes grabbed the lead on a driving lay-up from Sarah Skoronski at 25-24 and upped it to 26-24 when Roberts made the first of two free-throw attempts with 1:39 to play.
Senior Colleen Flood led all Shelton scorers with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers early in the third quarter. Skoronski added seven and Casey O’Connor had six.
“We had our share of opportunities in that final quarter to put the game away and we couldn’t,” said Shelton coach Joe Cavallaro. “It was one of our poorer shooting games all year. We’re usually scoring in the 40-44 point range. This was an off game for us.”
Shelton will close out its regular season on Monday night at Cheshire.
